Another technique you can use to improve your shooting before going out on the Sporting Clays course is to use a mirror to provide visual feedback on your gun mounting technique. This tip discusses and shows proper hand placement and coordination, gun-in-shoulder placement, and the difference between a good and poor gun mount.

Sporting Clays is an action sport requiring proper gun mount and movement of the gun with the target. Our goal is to develop a perfect moving mount which doesn’t have excessive or “teeter-totter” gun movement. By using a flashlight or laser with an empty gun in a safe environment you get immediate visual feedback and can develop a nice smooth swing.  This tip shows how to use both a flashlight and a laser inserted into the barrel of an empty shotgun to do just that.

Targets should be shot at the “sweet spot”: where the target is at its sharpest focus.  The course target setter realizes this and tries to make the shot more difficult by putting curl on the target at the transition point thus requiring a complex lead. A complex lead requires the shooter not only to be in front of the target but underneath it as well. This tip explains the concept of complex lead and shows you how to use “the box method” to consistently break targets which require two leads.
